Can building air filtration protect me from getting COVID-19?

英雄联盟s10竞猜Filtration in building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems can be a part of an overall risk mitigation approach, but it is not generally regarded as a solution by itself. There is no direct scientific evidence of benefit; however, some reduced exposure can reasonably be inferred based on the ability of some filters to remove particles that contain a SARS-CoV-2 virus.

英雄联盟s10竞猜In order for filters to have any impact on infectious disease transmission, transmission has to occur through the airborne route, filters have to be properly installed and maintained in appropriate systems to treat recirculated air, and filters have to be appropriately designed for the building in which they are used. More importantly, in most buildings and in most situations, filters may be considerably less effective than other infection control measures (e.g., physical distancing, isolation of known cases, mask wearing and hand-washing).

WVU will continue to follow guidance from public health officials and government agencies in regard to our cleaning and safety measures. As with building filtration, the details are important (e.g., efficiency and airflow rate of the air cleaner, sizing and placement within the space, maintenance and filter change, nature of space that is being cleaned) and appropriate portable filtration is likely only to be effective in concert with other measures.

If it does become damp or wet during the day, it's important to swap it out for a new, dry mask; there will be locations across campus to pick up a disposable mask in these cases. It's best to wash your mask each evening, and you can do it simply via hand washing with soap and warm water. Let the mask air dry overnight so it can keep its shape and last longer. You can also wash it via washer and dryer with detergent. Consider having a few masks/face coverings to ensure you have a clean mask each day. When taking off your mask to eat on campus, consider bringing a paper bag to safely store it in.

英雄联盟s10竞猜If Student Health believes that you should be placed in quarantine pending further evaluation or testing, this information will be conveyed to you and to the CARE Special Services Unit. Under what circumstances would WVU go entirely online? Under what circumstances would WVU send students home?

There is no single metric, specific number or percentage that would trigger the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 to change course. Rather, multiple factors are being reviewed in combination to determine if the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 is trending in the wrong direction.

To determine if a trend is concerning, the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 is frequently monitoring the following factors:

  2. Number of positive cases compared to total tests on a single day, cumulative and a seven-day rolling basis;
  3. Number of cases in Monongalia County per 100,000 people on a seven-day rolling average;
  4. R-naught values; which represents the spread of infection;
  5. The number of students in isolation and the percentage of isolation beds occupied;
  6. The number of students in quarantine and our ability to support those in quarantine;
  7. Information on hospitalizations and hospital capacity;
  8. State and county level data on the West Virginia DHHR’s website;
  9. Supply of personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies; and
  10. The ability of 英雄联盟s10竞猜 and local officials to effectively undertake case management and undertake contract tracing.

英雄联盟s10竞猜If trends indicate that community spread is moving too quickly, it does not mean the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 will automatically move to solely online course delivery. Other options could be implemented, such as further reducing activities on campus, restricting travel on campus or moving more or all classes online for a certain number of weeks to reduce spread.

If the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 and its partners in public health feel the community spread cannot be flattened or controlled, only then will the option of moving all classes online and halting all but essential operations on campus be implemented.

Much like a face-to-face course, a synchronous online course includes significant structure, deadlines and course learning outcomes that must be met in a set period of time as outlined on the course syllabus. These courses also include substantive instructor-initiated interaction with and among the students.

英雄联盟s10竞猜Synchronous online courses include live delivery and communications, which may happen using tools such as Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate. 英雄联盟s10竞猜 should prepare for these sessions by finishing any assigned readings, compiling questions they have for the instructor, and thinking about how they might be able to contribute to the next live session. 英雄联盟s10竞猜 may be asked to participate in video sharing, chat conversations, live polling and/or interactive whiteboard sessions to engage them in the learning experience.

On Thursday, the groups may trade places (with half of the students on campus and half online).

英雄联盟s10竞猜Since hybrid courses are a combination of face-to-face and online delivery, students can expect to see a variety of tools utilized. What is a hybrid-flexible (HyFlex) course and how will I know if my class is HyFlex?

英雄联盟s10竞猜 is new to WVU. However, WVU Teaching and Learning Commons has been training faculty and instructors all summer on how to adapt their courses to this delivery. In a HyFlex course, all core class content is available both face-to-face and online, and there are variations in instructional delivery. A Hyflex course may have both synchronous and asynchronous online elements. 英雄联盟s10竞猜 may have the option to attend on campus, online, or a combination of both based on preference. The primary benefit of HyFlex delivery is considered the flexibility to allow students more control over how they participate and complete course requirements.

At this point in time, the WVU course schedule does not specifically indicate a HyFlex course. On your WVU course schedule, a HyFlex course will look like a face-to-face course and will likely show:

  • Meeting days and times
  • Building location with an assigned room

Your instructor will provide specific information about how the course will function and when you are required to report to campus versus online. If the course has a room assignment and the student does not hear differently from the instructor, they should plan on reporting to campus on the first day of class with the appropriate PPE.

英雄联盟s10竞猜 should continue to monitor their MIX email and eCampus for information and watch for course syllabi to be posted.

What is an "upper-division" undergraduate course? Are ALL 300- and 400- level classes online?

The courses moved online were those that either had less than 20% of its students enrolled at the freshman rank and/or had less than 20 total freshmen enrolled. The list of those courses was shared with the college and school deans to work with the academic units to select those courses that could most readily be transitioned online without negatively impacting the quality of education delivered. The ultimate decision to move a course online was left to the academic units in consultation with their dean's office and the Provost's Office.

What is an “asynchronous” online course?

英雄联盟s10竞猜An “asynchronous” course refers to an online course that is conducted without any synchronous (or real time) activities. No campus visits are required. The instructor and students are not required to be logged into the course at the same time. However, this is not a self-paced course. Much like a face-to-face course or synchronous online course, an asynchronous online course includes significant structure, deadlines and course learning outcomes that must be met in a set period of time as outlined on the course syllabus. These courses also include substantive instructor-initiated interaction with and among the students.

英雄联盟s10竞猜In an asynchronous course, students complete blocks of assigned materials at a time of the student’s choosing prior to the established due dates defined within the syllabus. These activities might include watching pre-recorded videos, completing online interactions/simulations, participating in discussion forums based on prompts from the instructor, and/or responding to questions that have been designed by the instructor to check the understanding of key concepts.

英雄联盟s10竞猜On your WVU course schedule, a synchronous online course will likely show:

  • NO meeting days or times (or TBA)
  • Campus and building location as “Online”

What is being done to improve air quality on campus?

To effectively manage the 英雄联盟s10竞猜's heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to follow guidance from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the Centers for Disease Control and the National Air Filtration Association. In general, this guidance fits the following categories:

  • Increase the amount of outside air being introduced when appropriate. We have increased the amount of outside air to the highest levels possible while still maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity levels. We have completed spot checks and will continue to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) levels at random locations.
  • Utilize high-efficiency filtration where circulated air is utilized. We previously utilized MERV-8 air filtration; however, we are in the process of upgrading to MERV-13.
  • Continually maintain prescribed temperature and humidity levels. Unless special circumstances exist, we have adjusted HVAC systems to keep temperatures between 68- and 76-degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity between 50% and 60% where possible.

What’s the difference between isolation and quarantine?

The 英雄联盟s10竞猜 uses the terms “isolation” and “quarantine” for those who have COVID-19 related matters.

Isolation is avoiding contact with others for at least 10 days after your testing date, as directed by the local health department. If you live in a residence hall, you will move to Arnold Apartments. If living off campus, you stay away from others by using a separate living space. You should not leave this isolation space at all during the 10-day period. You are not allowed on campus for class or work at any point during this period, and you must remain in isolation until you are medically cleared.

Quarantine is avoiding contact with others to the furthest extent possible for the next 14 days, as directed by the local health department. You are likely in quarantine because you’ve been considered a close contact of someone who tested positive for COVID-19, and this quarantine period separates and restricts the movement of those exposed to COVID-19 to stop the spread of the virus. If you live in a residence hall, you will quarantine in your room and may only leave it to use the restroom throughout this time; meals will be provided. If you live off campus, you should stay away from others by using a separate living space. You should not be on campus for class or work at any point during this period. If you begin to feel ill and develop symptoms of COVID-19, you should call your primary care physician or WVU Medicine Student Health at 304-285-7200.

Related questions:

Why do I need to be tested when I arrive on campus?

It's important that WVU establishes a baseline of disease prevalence on campus. The best way to do this is testing when students, staff and faculty return to campus. This will allow the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 to monitor trends throughout the year as testing continues.

Why doesn't WVU give students the end date for quarantine? New

It's important to answer or promptly return calls from WVU Shared Services.

Why is a quarantine period longer than an isolation period?

WVU is following the CDC guidelines and timelines for isolation and quarantine. It can take a person anywhere from 2-14 days to experience symptoms or develop the infection, so a person must quarantine for 14 days. It has been found that a positive person is no longer contagious beyond the 10-day period, likely because they had it a few days prior to being symptomatic, so they must only isolate for 10 days.

Why is it safe for teachers to come back but not all students?

We have taken significant precautions to keep our faculty and students as safe as possible within the classroom, including plexiglass barriers, physical distancing and mask/face covering requirements. In addition, we’ve provided faculty with guidelines to assure that all students are following the necessary protocols. We understand that this situation is not ideal, but we know the importance of in-person instruction, and we are doing everything we can to continue that instruction.

Why is the 英雄联盟s10竞猜 ending on-campus classes early?

Public health officials warn that late fall could become challenging with the onset of the flu season combined with COVID-19. WVU is taking this precaution of not having students return to campus to reduce spread and keep faculty, staff and students healthy.

Why not just go fully online if the online experience has improved?

英雄联盟s10竞猜The online experience should improve for many, but there are still many classes, programs and majors that benefit from in-person instruction. In addition, we believe that the first semester of a college freshman is critical to the retention of a student, so we are asking that most incoming freshmen would be on-campus to start their WVU career on the right foot.

Why were some students asked to be testers?

The 英雄联盟s10竞猜 has provided WVU's health professions students with an opportunity to participate in a community service project to work alongside experienced medical personnel to collect anterior nasal swab specimen for COVID-19 testing in exchange for community service hours. This is a voluntary opportunity for students to gain community experience in the healthcare field.
